How to Prepare for Umrah: Your Complete Checklist
Preparing for Umrah is one of the most meaningful things a Muslim can do. Whether it's your first time or your fifth, having a clear plan takes away the stress and lets you focus on what matters most, your ibadah. This checklist covers everything, from the paperwork to the spiritual preparation.
1. Documentation & Admin
- Valid passport (at least 6 months from travel date)
- Umrah visa
- Vaccination certificates (check current requirements)
- Travel insurance that covers the Haramain region (check if insurance is included with your visa)
- Hotel and flight confirmations printed and saved offline
- Emergency contact details written down separately from your phone
2. Health Preparation
- Visit your GP at least 6–8 weeks before departure
- Get required vaccinations
- Purchase a travel first aid kit.
- If you take prescription medication, bring enough for the full trip plus extra
- Consider unscented skincare. Fragrance is prohibited during ihram. Our Unscented All Natural Skincare is formulated specifically for pilgrims.
3. What to Pack
Packing well means you can focus on worship rather than logistics. Essentials include:
- Ihram garments: men need two white, unstitched sheets. Women wear their normal modest clothing.
- Comfortable, well-worn walking shoes (you will walk miles)
- Lightweight modest clothing for outside ihram
- Small backpack or belt bag for tawaf and sa'i — our Ihram & Belt Bag is designed to be worn over ihram without pins or clips
- Unscented soap, shampoo, and moisturiser
- Reusable water bottle
- A prayer mat (lightweight travel size)
4. Organise Your Ibadah
Umrah has a specific sequence of rites. Knowing them confidently before you arrive means you can focus on presence, not procedure.
- Learn the rites in order: entering ihram → tawaf → sa'i → halq or taqsir
- Memorise or have access to the key duas for each stage
- Use a structured planner to record your intentions, schedule, and reflections
Our Umrah Planner walks you through each stage with space to write your duas, intentions, and reflections — available in Black, White, and Green.
5. Learn the Rites Step by Step
Beyond the checklist, understanding why you're performing each act deepens the experience. The Pilgrim's Step By Step Guide to Umrah Cards gives you a pocket-sized, visual reference for every step, perfect to carry on the day.

6. Mental & Spiritual Preparation
- Increase your dhikr and salah in the weeks before departure
- Make tawbah and settle any outstanding debts or disputes
- Write a list of people to make dua for
- Read about the history of Makkah and the significance and conditions of Umrah.
- Set a daily intention during your trip
Your Umrah Starts Before You Board
The pilgrimage begins with your niyyah, your intention. A prepared pilgrim is a present pilgrim. Use this checklist, pack thoughtfully, and trust that the preparation you do at home will carry you through every step in the Haram.
